Competitive Shooting Leagues at SharpShooters

Some people shoot for stress relief; others for personal protection; some just for fun. Still others shoot for the thrill of competition. In the world of shooting sports, it seems like there is no end to the different disciplines for literally anyone to compete. Pistol, rifle, shotgun, 2-gun, 3-gun, precision, tactical, indoor, outdoor…the list goes on and on. What I love most about competitive shooting is that anyone – literally anyone – can learn to shoot and then compete. Because of that, the different walks of life that represent each shooting sport are all over the map. We are very happy to host three competitive shooting leagues here at SharpShooters. We hope you’ll get to know one or more of them, and join the fun, and the competition.

About Competitive Matches at SharpShooters

Earlier in 2021, we invested in a significant upgrade to our tactical bay. We had ballistic material added to the side walls of the tactical bay, so that shooting competitions could fire in a 180° range, rather than always having to face down range towards the traditional range targets. No other range in the Atlanta area has a 180° tactical bay.

We also allow the competitions to utilize steel targets, and advance downrange as part of the course of fire.

The cost of participating in one of these competitive shooting matches is $20, just as if you were coming in to shoot on your own any other day or time of the week. The difference is that you’ll register in advance at Practiscore.com, which also serves as a scorekeeper for the various competitive shooting leagues.

USPSA

USPSA competitive shooting club meets Mondays at SharpShooters

The United States Practical Shooting Association (USPSA) is the national governing body of practical shooting in the United States under the International Practical Shooting Confederation (IPSC).

There are hundreds of USPSA clubs around the country, and you can find one near you by going here. The SharpShooters USPSA Club meets here on most Monday evenings. Regular members register to attend a weekly match at Practiscore.com, which serves as a registration service as well as a scorekeeper for all the matches.

Each week, if you want to join the SharpShooters USPSA club, you can arrive at 5:30 and do a quick orientation. Competition starts at 6:30PM.

From outside the window looking into the SharpShooters Tactical Bay, it can be extremely intimidating to look upon a USPSA Match, especially if you’ve never participated in any sort of competitive shooting environment. We’re offering a 2-hour USPSA orientation on Saturday, August 14, from 1-3PM. You can sign up here. The cost is $15.

You’ll learn the rules of USPA Matches, walk through a sample course of fire, and all the basics of participating in a USPSA match. Remember, everyone had to start here, at orientation, to begin participating, then competing, and then winning USPSA matches!

IDPA competitive shooting club meets Wednesdays at SharpShooters

IDPA

The International Defensive Pistol Association (IDPA) is the governing body of a shooting sport that simulates self-defense scenarios and real life encounters. The SharpShooters IDPA Club meets on Wednesday evenings

On the surface, IDPA looks a lot like USPSA, but they are very different. IDPA focuses on using firearms that you would ordinarily use for personal defense, concealed carry firearms. From the IDPA website:

IDPA is the use of practical equipment including full charge service ammunition to solve simulated real world self-defense scenarios using practical handguns and holsters that are suitable for self-defense use. The main goal is to test the skill and ability of an individual.

IDPA meets on Wednesdays. New shooters should arrive at 6PM for orientation. You can register on Practiscore.com for IDPA as well. The rules for IDPA competitions are here.

We are hosting an IDPA Orientation session, similar to that of USPSA, on Tuesday, August 17, 2021, from 6pm – 8pm. You can register for the IDPA orientation here. The cost of the orientation is $15.

US ARMS

US ARMS competitive shooting club meets Thursdays at SharpShooters

While USPSA and IDPA focus on competitions with pistols, The United States Action Rifle Match Society (US ARMS) is an action shooting sport dedicated to providing owners of modern sporting rifles an opportunity to compete and develop their shooting skills.

US ARMS matches are held on Wednesdays at SharpShooters. Practiscore also hosts the registration and scoring for US ARMS, in addition to USPSA and IDPA.

As you may imagine, the rules and format for US ARMS matches are somewhat different from USPSA and IDPA. The focus is on using modern sporting rifles of all kinds for speed and accuracy.

Anyone Can Compete

Shooting sports are open to all. Anyone can compete. The scoring is objective, based on how fast and how accurately you fired your weapon at the targets as they are presented.

The best part of joining any of these clubs is the community and camaraderie among your fellow participants, young and old. All share a love of shooting and competition. We hope you’ll discover the great sport of shooting, and join us for USPSA, IDPA, or US ARMS matches in the near future.
