Gun Control Creates Increased Defense Inequality

There’s a country song by Bill Currington that’s appropriate for our world today: God is great, beer is good, and people are crazy. It’s that last part that I’m focused on here today, because you just never know. People are crazy. You don’t know what’s going to come at you, when it’s going to come at you, or how fast it’s coming at you. There are thousands of examples caught on video of people being attacked – many in broad daylight – and other people literally standing (or sitting) by doing absolutely nothing in defense of the victim.

Here’s the first thing I read just this morning in an email from Erick Erickson:

There were more shootings in Atlanta, GA yesterday. Several of them were caught on cell phones. A stabbing happened too. In Austin, TX, a shooting happened. This morning, in Alabama, someone opened fire at a water plant.

This point is where the 2nd Amendment comes in. We have the God given (NOT Government given) right to the defense of ourselves, our families, and our homes. Period, end of story. So let’s talk about defense for a moment.

A Brief History of Weapons Technology

First, people attacked with stones and also used stones for self defense, whether hurled manually, mounted on the end of a stick or arrow, or launched with a catapult. Then people discovered metal; first bronze, then iron to make steel. Then we discovered that we could mount a piece of rock or metal on a really small, aerodynamic stick, and launch it hundreds of yards at great speeds, and the bow and arrow dominated weaponry for hundreds of years. But still, when attacked, an individual could wield a sword, a large stick, a shield, a knife, or that bow & arrow to defend himself or his family. IF he was allowed to own such a weapon and IF he could afford to purchase or craft such a weapon.

During that period, the bow & arrow weapon system was continually improved. The makers learned how to fashion bow sticks and strings with stronger and more elastic materials. Meanwhile, bronze and steel on the tips of arrows became increasingly lethal. Around that same time, someone got the idea to add fire to the tip of an arrow and do even more devastation from far away.

During the “Unleash Hell” scene in the movie “Gladiator”, every weapons system mentioned above is put to use, and then some. The victor in ancient warfare always used the most advanced weapons systems to their advantage. They all fought with valor, courage, strength, skill, and strategy. But, in the end, if you never got within 100 yards of your foe before he put a flaming arrow through your chest, you lost every time, no matter how good your defense seemed to be.

For centuries, the weapons used in such battles consisted of wood, stone, and metal, ever increasingly improved in their strength, uses, and lethality. Do you see the trend? From a rock to the ability to hurl a projectile using some sort of mechanical contraption, and from a small blade to a sword that you could shave your face with, man is always improving the technology behind and the utilization of weapons systems for both offense and defense.

Why Do Weapons Keep Getting Better?

Because we have the God given (NOT Government given) right to the personal defense of ourselves, our families, and our homes against anyone who challenges our safety. The continual improvement in weapons systems is a natural byproduct of natural economics: there is always someone who wants what someone else has, and who is willing to devote themselves to defeating that person and taking what they have. It is competition in its most pure form, and when competition exists (e.g., in the free market), the product always improves.

That example applies to yesterday’s and today’s geopolitical landscape as well as the streets of Atlanta (or name any other crime ridden city). China wants our economy. The thug on the street wants your cash or your car. How will we as a nation fend off the largest population in the world? How will you fight off the criminal on the street?

Most of the weapons systems mentioned in this article are available to the general public today, though many aren’t exactly practical. You can buy a bow & arrow, knives of 1000 different flavors, shields, swords, etc. Haven’t seen a lance lately, and those are difficult to maneuver anyway.

So, What Is Your Defense?

So what do you use to defend yourself, your family, or your home? If you’re reading this article, then you probably have something for an answer. The audience we (the 2A community) are all trying to reach today is the group of people that fall into one of two categories. Either they don’t think such a situation will ever arise, so it’s a waste of time to prepare for their own defense; or they choose to rely on local police for protection from criminals.

Here’s two hard truths that match up pretty well with those two assumptions.

  1. First, people are crazy. Go to any large city. Any large city. Walk around at night, and ask yourself if you feel safe. I’ve lived in Atlanta since the 1970s. I lived in Buckhead, 1/4 mile from what used to be the bar district (now more like Rodeo Drive). When I lived there in the early 90s, I felt safe, but I still got robbed in broad daylight.
  2. Second, no matter how awesome your local police are, the closest police unit is still at least 4 minutes away. Depending on the area, time of day, and severity of the crime, they could be 20 minutes away, if they can even respond. Add to that this insane movement to “defund the police”, and you’ve probably doubled the response time in those cities that have adopted that approach to law enforcement.

So, I ask again, how will you defend yourself, your family, and your home when (not if) someone attempts to attack you for any reason or no reason at all?

Politicians say there are too many guns. Activists say “nobody needs 30 rounds to deer hunt.” None of that even matters, so turn off CNN, Fox, or whatever TV station you’re hearing that from, and think for yourself. YOU are your own protector, your family’s protector, your own home defense. Now, how will YOU defend your home?

Guns: The Great Equalizer

No matter who is coming at you, if you have a gun, you have an advantage. Notice I did not say “THE” advantage, because just owning a gun doesn’t make you invincible. Once you have a gun, you must know:

  • Where it is
  • How to use it
  • When to use it
  • When NOT to use it
  • What to do next after you use it

Those are all very answerable given the proper time and motivation to learn them. All but one of them are facts to memorize. “How to use it” is not just a fact to memorize, but is no different than learning any other skill you’ve learned to get through some part of your life. You learned to drive, to cook, to operate some machine. You learned a lot of tools that help you get by in life. Firearms are a tool to help you defend yourself, your family, and your home. Learning how to properly and safely use a gun requires training.

Once you know how to use a gun properly, then you have THE advantage over your adversary. What other tool can you purchase that will give you the advantage over your attacker? Let me ask that question a different way. What other tool can ANYONE purchase to have the advantage over an attacker?

And that’s where the word “equalizer” comes in. The media suppresses them, but there are hundreds and hundreds of accounts every year of average everyday people using a firearm to defeat an attacker, and defend themselves from injury or death. Teenagers, young girls, big bad guys, senior citizens…doesn’t matter. When you have a gun, and know how to use it properly, you can defeat that attacker.

If you are not allowed to buy or carry a gun, you are at a disadvantage to the criminal attacker. Only government can “not allow” someone to buy a gun, and anytime any government entity prevents a law-abiding citizen from buying a gun, that entity is in direct violation of the Constitution’s 2nd Amendment: “shall not be infringed.” Any “gun control” measure actually creates inequality where it matters most: life and death.

The 2nd Amendment = Equality

And that’s what the 2nd Amendment to the US Constitution is all about: equality in defense. Whether it means defending yourself against a lone attacker when you’re out shopping, or defending your home against a home invasion, or a car jacking attempt, or – God Forbid – a literal attack on our soil by a military enemy, we – EVERY Lawful US Citizen – each have the right to defend ourselves, period. We are equal in our freedom to defend ourselves with firearms if we choose to do so.

We are not reliant upon any government entity to come to our rescue. No government entity is capable of preventing a crime against an individual unless an officer happens to be present at that moment. It’s simply not possible for the police to **prevent** a crime. Deter, possibly, but prevent? No.

Have you ever heard the saying, “If only that criminal would use his brain for good”? Well, most don’t, but some are really, really savvy, and they are always seeking the best tools for their trade, whether that trade is hacking our gas pipeline, attacking a cargo ship, or randomly attacking people on the street. Therefore, we, the non-criminals, must maintain our self defense tools just as heartily as the criminals continually upgrade their “tools” to try to violate us. We must compete with the enemy to create the best defense.

When we stop, let go, and give up that right to defend ourselves, and hand that RESPONSIBILITY to a government entity, it stops. Our ability to properly defend ourselves stops. What does government do well? I could go on for days there, but “respond quickly” is usually not near the top of the list. Even the most squeaky clean, well run police or Sheriff’s office cannot be everywhere at once. If you rely completely upon that government entity, you rely on something that is inherently unpredictable, and therefore unreliable.

Gun Control Creates Inequality

Our founders knew that. They knew that each individual holds the ultimate responsibility for his or her own protection, defense, and safety. Our founders knew that the government was not, could not be, and is not meant to be everyone’s protector. They knew it is not possible. So they codified our right to own and carry firearms. When it comes to defense, we can all be equal.

And isn’t that what those who oppose gun rights the most say they are seeking the most? Equality? When everything goes sideways, firearms are what makes us all equal in our ability to defend and protect. For those who want equality, they must embrace equality of defense and protection, which means equality of freedom and life.
